Highlights from Chapter 7 in <<The Craft of Scientific Writing>> by Michael Alley

1. A title specifies the scope of the work

In scientific writing, a title engages the audience by identifying the scope of the document.

A strong title for a scientific paper orients readers by (1) identifying the field of work for the document and (2) separating that document from all other documents in that field.

When you have a larger number of essential details, one strategy to help the audience sort those details is to use a colon within the title.

2. The introduction prepares readers for the middle

1) What exactly is the work?
2) Why is the work important?
3) What is needed to understand the work?
4) How will the work be presented?

3. The middle presents the work in a logical and persuasive fashion

1) Choose appropriate strategies
2) Create descriptive headings
3) Choose an appropriate depth
4) The conclusion summarizes the middle and provides a future perspective
